The Onion News Network's success in cable news led to the launch of an additional 24 cable channels. They include -Span, which primarily covers U.S. Congressional sessions, and Onion Prisoners News Network, which provides news to more than 800 million prisoners worldwide. The history of the network can be traced all the way back to the radio tower purchased by The Onion founder and president T. Herman Zweibel in 1882. The Onion released its first newsreel with moving pictures in 1889. In 1953, The Onion brought its brand of news to television, with the airing of The Onion News at Five, and shifted to 24-hour all-news programming in 1982. The Onion News Network now has thousands of reporters in the field across the country and around the world.
